When is a sink not a sink?

I did not quite understand what I was seeing when I first saw the pictures of the HF01 sink by Thoms & Nilsson. The HF01 uses a solid stone slab as the sinks basin, but instead of being concave it is completely flat allowing the water to flow straight over the edges to the drain at the base of the bases stand on the floor. The first thought that came to mind was why would you do this, the Thoms & Nilsson website answers this question. According to the makers with the advent of mixing taps it is no longer necessary to have a basin to mix the water to a comfortable temperature allowing for the unusual design of the HF01.

Hi Egg, I love your webpage. I have been following these new fangled sink designs for some time now, and test driven different types in bathrooms and showrooms such as Source 1 Zero in Fyshwick. I'm waiting for a design that I can actually use in a fitout but they all seem to overlook one simple thing: the splash factor! Thoms & Nilsson reckon the only point of a basin was to mix hot and cold water. What about the curved surface which bounces the splash into the drain, rather than onto the mirror and your good pants? Maybe it's just me...I should aspire to living the designer lifestyle where everyone walks around naked and has staff to clean up the mess. Posted by: Christie Holmes at March 25, 2005 04:02 PM
